Back in Rau’s office, he turned to face me. “She is impressive. I didn’t even see her draw the daggers. How many does she carry?”

“Two always, sometimes four. And a shuriken, ever since I gave it to her.”

“All this time?”

“Yes.”

“She won Saleia over.”

“And what about you?”

Rau’s lips quirked. “Perhaps. Her skills are alluring.”

I chuckled. ‘Alluring’ was not the word I would have chosen in the beginning. “Just remember brother, she is my Ryges. You can find your own.”

“She will draw the eye of many.”

“She believes that she is the ‘ugly Human’ and that no one will find her remotely attractive.”

One eyebrow shot to Rau’s hairline. “You are serious?”

“Yes.”

“And you have told her no different?”

“When we were stranded, her kind were very difficult to look at. I now understand this misconception was influenced by the Human government males, and their deceptive nature. That made them extremely ugly to us.”

“Ah, yes. Personality can taint even the most blessed.”

“Yes.” I turned, focusing my attention on the star chart. “Have you had a chance to look at this?”

Rau walked over and the two of us discussed the possibility that someone was transmitting information to the DuFo.

Everything pointed toward a traitor, yet the longstanding hatred between our species made it nearly inconceivable. But if for some extraordinary reason it did turn out to be true…it would result in the traitor’s immediate execution.

After studying the information, Rau relaxed deep into his seat and crossed his arms.

“It seems impossible, yet plausible at the same time.”

“Yes. I will have Strikr run diagnostics and check for any coded transmissions not logged by the computer.”

“Good.”
